The ground of Rose Black is a deep charcoal-black, varied in tone across the surface, with an undertone of warm rose-brown that surfaces most visibly in raking or warm light. Across this complex ground, veining moves in tones of pale grey-white and cream, sometimes fine and nervous, sometimes broad and sweeping, with occasional threads of warmer cream that carry the rose warmth into the veining itself. The total visual impression is of a black stone with a secret: in neutral or cool light it reads as an elegant charcoal-black.
